What is Extended Personal Property Pac - Travel Insurance Benefit Spotlight

Posted Jan 19, 2016 8:57:42 AM in Travel Insurance 101 by Amanda Hand

Travelers call in with questions on a regular basis regarding their coverage for personal items. Sometimes, they want additional coverage for property that is valuable. Things like sports equipment, jewelry and professional or occupational equipment may not be covered to their full value under their regular policy.

Travelers are often concerned with how well the airlines will care for their products - will they be lost or stolen? Will the trip they booked specifically to use that sports equipment be negatively impacted? The truth is, it's always a possibility.

So, we decided to cover TravelSafe's Extended Personal Property Pac in this month's Travel Insurance Benefit Spotlight.

Cost of coverage

For all of our TravelSafe Vacation Protection Plans, the Extended Personal Property Pac is only around $15, depending on your state's regulations. This means, for a nominal fee, you can have up to $1,000 of coverage on your personal items, equipment or sports rentals.

When it can help

If you are traveling for work, and any professional or occupational equipment that is checked is lost, stolen or delayed, the benefit can pay out to the maximum benefit amount shown in your confirmation of benefits.

A lot of skiers and snowboarders often ask about coverage for their equipment or rentals when they are looking into travel insurance for ski trips. This additional benefit can aid sports travelers if their checked equipment is damaged, lost or stolen while in custody of a responsible party.

What the benefit includes

  • Ski equipment
  • Mountain biking equipment
  • Rock climbing gear
  • Ice climbing gear
  • Most sporting equipment
  • Professional or occupational equipment/property
  • Telephones
  • PDA devices
  • Computer hardware/software
  • Other personal items

How to make a claim

To make a claim, it is important to have documentation. You should save a copy of the documentation for your checked equipment. Most airlines and valets have print or written receipts. You also want to report the claim at the time of loss, and have documentation for the delay/loss of your property.

Depending on your state's regulations, you may be subject to a deductible of $100.

What it doesn't cover

TravelSafe's Personal Property Pac will not duplicate any benefits payable under the policy. But with this benefit, you are able to add additional coverage to your personal property that may not be covered under the Baggage & Personal Effects benefit.

As always, be sure to read your confirmation of benefits. If you have questions about your travel insurance, do not hesitate to pick up the phone and talk to a specialist today.
